Unlocking Potential: The Power of Nature for Children with Dyslexia and ADHD

In 2022, researchers at the University of Cambridge concluded that people with dyslexia are not disordered. They are specialized — wired by evolution for exploration, discovery, and the search for the unknown. The lead researcher called it an explorative bias and said: "We urgently need to start nurturing this way of thinking to allow humanity to continue to adapt and solve key challenges."


That nurturing begins outside.



The Magic of Unstructured Nature


Drop a child in nature and watch what happens. Not organized nature. Not nature with an agenda. Just nature. A stream to follow. A mountain path to climb. A field of wildflowers to explore. A ladybug to watch. A sky full of stars and nowhere to be.


Watch what happens to their shoulders. Watch what happens to their eyes. The weight they carry all day — the effort, the vigilance, the quiet exhaustion of a mind working twice as hard as everyone around it just to keep up — begins to lift.


Something releases. Something that was clenched opens.




For the child with dyslexia or ADHD, the return to open space is not merely a reward for getting through the hard part. It is the thing that gives their brain power.


It is where the dots begin to connect on their own. Ideas come alive without anyone asking them to. Genius — the oblique, luminous kind that lives inside these minds — gets the room it needs to rise to the surface.


Exploring Unique Minds


These minds don't just see what others miss. They combine what others never thought to put together. They do it best when nobody is asking them to sit still.


Not everyone can access this kind of intellect so naturally. It is a gift, wired into the dyslexic and ADHD mind. Like most gifts, it cannot be forced or scheduled.


Dyslexia rewires the way a mind processes language. In doing so, it often unlocks extraordinary visual, spatial, and pattern-recognition abilities. ADHD rewires the way a mind filters the world. It opens the door to rapid idea generation, risk tolerance, and a relentless hunger for what's new and possible. Different gifts. Different wiring. Both remarkable.


Often, they arrive together in the same child. My daughter has both. This means she got a double dose of everything that makes these minds extraordinary. It also means the water, the trail, and the open sky are just as much her classroom as any room with four walls.


The Extraordinary Mind in the Age of AI

Jo Malone left school at 13 with no qualifications and severe dyslexia. She built Jo Malone London from a kitchen sink by combining scent with memory, music, color, and emotion in ways nobody else's brain could navigate. She has said: "That's where my dyslexia is my best friend, because it's taught me to create differently and use scent like a different language." She sold her company to Estée Lauder and then built an entirely new fragrance empire from scratch. The connecting mind never stops.


Robert Ballard couldn't sit still in a classroom. His mother gave him license to roam. He spent his childhood at the ocean's edge, exploring tidal pools for hours, watching the sea trap life and release it with the tide. He grew up to find the Titanic on the ocean floor, using, he says, a three-dimensional spatial vision his dyslexia gave him. He could see in his mind what others could not find on a map.


Mike Sinyard built Specialized Bicycles after discovering that riding through open country restored what the classroom had taken from him. His ADHD brain found clarity on trails, in fresh air, in the rhythm of movement through open space. His foundation now funds the research to prove what he already knew in his body.


None of them found what they were looking for inside four walls.


Give them nature. And let the gift bubble up.




The Science Behind Nature's Healing Power


The research keeps pointing to the same thing. Attention Restoration Theory tells us that natural environments restore depleted attention in ways no structured activity can replicate. For a child with dyslexia or ADHD who has spent the day working twice as hard as everyone around her just to keep up, the open sky is not empty. It is giving back what the day took away.


In February 2025, Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, one of the most powerful AI companies in the world, told the Economic Club of New York that dyslexic, non-playbook thinking is becoming more valuable in the age of AI. Not less. More. As artificial intelligence takes over the routine, the linear, the prescribed — the mind that was never wired for routine becomes the most extraordinary mind in the room.


An explorer's brain needs room to explore. That is not a metaphor. It is science.


To be blessed with a mind that collects information differently, at the precise moment the world needs exactly that, is extraordinary.


Your child's brain does not need more structure in the summer. It needs more sky.


Give them space. Let them wander. Let them find the thing nobody else noticed — the animal track in the mud, the pattern in the water, the connection between two ideas that adults stopped being able to see long ago.


That is not a distraction from their future. That is the beginning of it.
